My sculptures are a personal narrative with viewer participation on an almost
subliminal level.
When I let go, I am transported to a new vision where there
is a story being told, and I don’t always feel like I am consciously developing
that story. At the end of the whole process, I discover what is really going on
in my mind. It is related to myth and story from past experiences and
literature and trying to make something from my place in the natural world. When I stay open,
I follow my instincts and intuition and things work out. I let things develop and let the whimsy come out. Balancing design
and form calls for constant attention. I try to keep the work turning
constantly so I do not over or under work one side. I want the whole piece to
be interesting wherever you look. I want there to be no front or back.
Working with clay
makes me feel connected with the natural world. I am creating art from earth
material about earth. I love to play and experiment with clay and glazes. That
exploration has taken me to a new level of expertise.
After more than 35 years,
I still feel a freshness and willingness to experiment. |
